AN INTERVIEW WITH WALLACE HUO @ IQIYI (02.08.2015)

A gist of what happened, would appreciate if you could fill in the blanks.

HIS EXPRESSIVE EYES
Oh the tightness. He said he just finished Biao Men so no hair and so had to wear a cap and then the wig and the cap was so tight he can't basically move his eyes or skin around his eyes. At that time he didn't know if his expressive eyes worked but of course all work out fine. The interviewer said the series is very popular, broke all records at iqiyi and he said thanks to the young viewers but the interviewer said his mom liked the show too and he seems surprised and interviewer said his mom liked BZH the most and Wallace being curious asked why and interviewer said his mom said the character was different, rarely seen these days.

HURT BACK
Then it touched on wire scenes and he was asked that he hurt his back and one time he looked hurt which was that video we have all seen. He confirmed his back was hurt during Hong Fu Nu (wow long time) and it never really healed and it was difficult because even if he wasn't doing stunts he still need to wear the wiring and well, it hurt in short.

DIFFICULTY IN FILMING
Difficulty in filming is not the wiring, the stunts and such. In fact he said he is always filming ancient series every summer and due to CPIII he had no problems with the effects and stunts. But that particular year for HQG was most difficult because it was the hottest. He said he is someone who is used to being hot, he is ok with the heat and even he felt the effect of it. That was the difficult part and it was very very very difficult.

WHY HE ACCEPTED THE ROLE
Famous now is that he rejected the role. He once said he has tire of ancient series and all and so why he accepted HQG, what made him say yes. He said he didn't know if he could surpass his other memorable role, Xu Changqing in CPIII and he had filmed too many ancient series. The interviewer I think interjected that also too many "bai bai bai" in his roles "the word for white". Funny. Anyway he accepted eventhough he was resting then because he asked someone to tell him the story and he felt this was different. It will be challenging because he can't express his love too openly and can't admit the love, since between master and disciple and he felt this is something new for him, how is he going to present his feelings and emotions to an audience, to convince them that his BZH loves his disciple more than anyone else when there is so much restriction? That is why he accepted the role. It was challenging for him and the love story moved him.

WAS HE AFFECTED BY THE DEEP MOVING FORBIDDEN LOVE STORY
He said he rarely gets affected by his roles, which he has said before. He doesn't like those deep moving I suppose tortorous forbidden love story and he avoids such script but HQG is different. he is that sort of actor that gives his 100% on a set but also can discard his role after director yells cut. He doesn't and rarely gets too emotionally involved but he can honestly say HQG moved him several times, especially towards the end where he felt he was emotionally affected by the deep moving forbidden love story, not those so obvious on the surface but those that is felt. So yes, he was affected.

*At some point he forgotten the question! No wonder he had to re read scripts and all. He's getting old!*

CHEMISTRY WITH LIYING
He said this was his first collaboration with Liying. He said from the get go he had that chemistry with Liying. When he said yes to the role he asked who was gonna be HQG and he was told it was liying. He said they clicked from the moment they met and because of the age difference he felt he was the shifu and had a protective instinct for her and he said her jovial bubbly personality helped him to portray the cold emotionless shifu. Her acting style is very natural so it was fairly easy. He said they were very supportive of one another and it really helped in portraying the characters. He felt Liying is HQG, and so it was an easy partnership.


WILL HE CONSIDER OTHER XIANXIA ROLES
Difficult to find a role that is so suitable and written so well and a xianxia series also. So he said it may take something special to touch his heart so to speak because at the end of the day he wants to try different role.

WHAT SORT OF MODERN ROLES HE LIKE TO PORTRAY

FANS REACTION TO BZH
He said he hasn't read the online reaction to BZH but his staff/colleagues have informed him. He said he doesn't really critique his character the same way audiences do and his standard may be different, he looks at things differently like did he portray the character well as opposed to whether BZH is cold on the outside, emotional on the inside.

WHAT SORT OF AN ACTOR HE IS WITH REGARDS TO CRITIQUES BY VIEWERS
Good question. Is he that sort that will consider or care about the critiques as he filmed (this is a high profile adaptation) or is he that sort who just does his work and the rest let the viewers decide at the end of it. He said he is the latter. He will let the audience decide, critique and he said he will listen to the critique and see which they can improve on next time.

IS HE THE SAME AS BZH PERSONALITY WISE
Since he gives people an impression he is sorta cold like BZH, or super serious and all. He said no, I think he said he worries too much? Anyway he differentiates between work and private life. So no, he is not the same as BZH.

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE MAIN SUPPORTING CASTS IN MANGO TV

Summary by Elizabeth and appearance of the interviews in that particular order.

Ma Ke (Sha Qianmo):  
Ma Ke acted since he was 9 as his older brother was an actor too and he got picked up by the directors when his brother brought him to the studios . He initially thought he wasn't up for taking on Sha Jie Jie's role as it is both simple and complicated. But the director told him to get tips from watching Bridgette Lin's DFBB. After some more character analysis from the director, he felt more confident in acting SQM. Some fans of the novel are unhappy as he still looks quite manly and doesn't fit the breathtaking beauty that SQM is, but Ma Ke's not bothered as it is impossible to please all. But he is happy with his performance. He says he not too fussed about looks because it is the combination of the charisma of the role and the actor's own personal charisma that can cause an impact.

Zhang Dan Feng (Dongfang Yu Qing):  
He has been acting for years but not being able to find fame until DFYG. There was some initial doubts about him taking on the role but that was quickly dispelled after seeing some scenes of his acting. Zhang Dan Feng finds it hard to act in a xianxia as it is his first time and he has to learn to act differently in green cloth scenes as he has to use his imagination before CGI gets added. His greatest difficulty is not playing DFYQ, but playing his two personalities as if they were 2 people. He originally wanted to add in some evil glares as DFYG when HQG's back was turned, but the director discouraged it, and told him to act out DFYG's bumbling cute side in a totally different way to the creepy feeling as Yi Xiu Jun. Zhang Dan Feng previously met Zhao Li Ying in the "New Huan Zhu Ge Ge" where they developed a friendship that has helped their chemistry in TJOF. Zhang Dan Feng finds a connection to DFYG as they share the same view on love - the greatest love is not to possess but to sacrifice.

Jiang Xin (Zixun):  
Jiang Xin was already a well known actress before TJOF as she cated as Hua Fei in "Zhen Hua Zhuan", who shares similar traits as Zi Xun (controlling, stubborn, strong obsession). Actually, she was only supposed to take on the role as a guest star only, but scenes for her kept getting added after shooting a few scenes where she amazed the director. She is on good terms with the production company so did not hesitate in taking the role. She originally thought it would be simple but then she got shocked when she read the script, fining out that her scenes were all important and emotional. She felt fatigued both physically and emotionally as the weather was hot. Jiang Xin says that the majority of her previous roles have been righteous characters in serious productions, and hardly participates in idol dramas. She is afraid to be stereotyped in the same type of roles so she wants to try different roles like comedy. The role she wants to act is actually SQM, as she wants to challenge a male role. In terms of love, she wants something more slow but long-lasting.

Li Chun (Ni Mantian):  

People were initially surprised that such a sweet pretty girl was given the mean role of NMT. Li Chun likes the role of NMT as she is quite simple and straightforwards - she doesn't hide her feelings and will tell you to your face that she hates you. She i actually on quite good terms with ZLY so she had to distance herself from ZLY in order to convincingly act out the atrocities done to HQG. ZLY comments that she went through a similar experience in her evil role from "The Palace" so she told Li Chun to go for it while acting and not to hold back. Li Chun would rather risk people scolding her than not trying her best to bring out the character. If she had a choice, she would still choose to act NMT because she had not tried such a role before and she appreciates the strong definition between love and hate that NMT has.

AN INTERVIEW WITH WALLACE ABOUT BZH IN MANGO TV

Interesting serious interview where Wallace talks about predominantly The Journey Of Flower.

Some tidbits...(will add more as I go along)

I think Li Chun aka NMT is in danger of fangirling Wallace! Only good words, like how he never complained once.

Anyway....

Took Wallace 6 months (TBC) to consider accepting the role because he was sick of ancient costume series which presented nothing new until his friend who read the book told him the story and he felt it was something different

Wallace felt Zhao Liying is perfectly cast as HQG because she is not put on cute fake, she came across as sincere and you just can't see anyone else in that role

He doesn't have Weibo, because he wants his work to speak for itself, he doesn't do promotion much, no ads,  nothing because he doesn't want attention away from his love of acting.

He loves to act, wants to seek great directors. Ang Lee!! Can you hear him, your fellow Taiwanese?

He doesn't use umbrella because he doesn't carry one. This was because when he was younger he used to take umbrellas out and losses them and got scolded by his mom and it sorta like haunted him he supposed. No Wallace, you are just humble.

He feels he treats everyone nice, with decency, he doesn't put on airs, doesn't wish to be that sort anyway.

He did analyse BZH but let me get back on that part and a short segment on the various rumoured relationships with one admitted relationship and it simply ended with Wallace wanting to seek new challenges and directors and just do what he loves.

Anyway I think his unofficial fanclub will translate this. How can they not when he looked like this...

OBLIGATORY UNNECESSARY PROMO BY MOST CAST MEMBER OF JOURNEY OF FLOWER AT HUNAN TV'S POPULAR QUASI GAME SHOW, HAPPY CAMP

Which should be Wallace's official 2nd appearance at a game show? He was teased a lot in his first so not sure about this yet but I am sure it would be cute and funny and awesome even if like I said, no need to promote this series. It already IS. Ok? Since Journey Of Flower is ultimately about suffering for your love, here lo and behold we shall all suffer because NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES. Yeap, I feel like HQG now.

The intro was so funny. Basically the show explains most series' relationships is very complicated but Journey Of Flower can be summarised into 3 points which is all you need to know;

1. Every woman loves Bai Zihua.

2. Every man loves Hua Qiangu. But Hua Qiangu only has eyes for Bai Zihua.

3. Bai Zihua loves but does not (dare to) admit his love.

The end. True! True!!

By the way this show exposes the biggest spoiler by the actor himself (oh dear!) and when I was watching the I think 67 piercing whatever on BZH's body whilst he was midair, PLEASE DON'T HIT THEREEEEEEEEEEEEEE! was all I can think about. I wonder who will volunteer to take out all the pieces eh?

I am speechless at how beautiful one of the series' score is, more so when shown with slides from the series, absolutely perfect. You can watch it at TUDOU because I have no idea how to embed that video here. So I uploaded to youtube, hopefully you get to hear it before it gets deleted if the copyrighters are diligent which they aren't usually.

By the way you can get the MP4 and MP3 version from HERE at the bottom of the page, however sound not that good since ripped from the tudou video. If you can find or have the real mp3 file where the sound is crystal clear, do share and you can put a condition like don't upload that and I won't. Until a better copy comes along, let's suffer for the beauty of this score.
